Nigel Groom

Born in Somerset and having trained and worked in several fields, as a printer, theologian, musician and over the last 25 years as a Jungian Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist, he has also alongside his private practice worked for the past 14 years as a self-taught artist. He has a small studio near Worcester where I enjoy the solitude and inspiration to paint a few hours a week.

As an artist he draws on a variety of subjects and influences, painting mainly out of my imagination in what might be considered to be a modernist style rather than a traditional representational style, although he would not want his work to be defined as that. His abstract paintings take on a much looser and expressionistic tone, giving free rein to the imagination and feelings in the moment. I like my work to be vibrant, joyous, full of life, but also challenging, thought-provoking and always seeking to explore and move forward into new territories.

Using acrylics and oils mainly on canvas but sometimes on board, I enjoy exploring image, texture and colour through a variety of styles, whatever I happen to be moved by at the time of painting. I do not like to be confined or defined by any one particular style or approach as I feel this destroys the importance of soul in art. I believe it is out of Soul that true creativity springs, and that’s why I feel impelled to paint
